Who should take this course?
React Right is SSI's emergency training program, consisting of the following basic components: Primary Assessment, First Aid & CPR Skills, Primary Stabilization Techniques, and includes two optional components: Oxygen Administration in Diving Emergencies and Automated External Defibrillation Basics. By the end of this course you will be able to recognize and respond to emergency situations with first aid and CPR, and you will be able to avoid inappropriate action that could make a victim’s condition worse.

Completing the SSI React Right Program and keeping your training current places you in the center of the ‘Cycle of Life’ — a system of people like you who are trained to begin the process of life-saving by recognizing emergency situations, by responding appropriately, and by avoiding unnecessary or inappropriate care. Their actions give victims the help they desperately need in the event of a life-threatening emergency. The “Cycle of Life” would crumble without individuals–such as you–trained in First Aid, CPR, AED, and Oxygen Administration in Diving Emergencies.

What will you learn?
First aid techniques are constantly being improved, making this course valuable to both new and experienced SSI React Right Providers. This course has two parts: In part one, you will independently study the course materials and complete the knowledge review questions at your own pace, in whatever learning environment works best for you. Part two is a skill development session with an SSI React Right Instructor where you will refine and demonstrate your new first aid skills in realistic, scenario-based settings.

During this session you will have the opportunity to ask any unanswered questions and will complete a written exam. After completing all course requirements, you will be certified as an SSI React Right Provider–a certification that will be valid for two years. This course is not intended to replace a full length Emergency Medical Instruction course (for EMT or higher qualifications).

The SSI React Right approach is designed to help first aid providers control an emergency situation and deliver first aid until emergency medical personnel take over. This approach is simple to follow and incorporates all of the information an SSI React Right Provider needs to appropriately respond to an emergency comfortably, competently, and successfully.

Primary assessment is the first step of the SSI React Right Program. Prior to rendering aid, you must assess the scene, identify the victim(s), and determine whether EMS personnel are available.

Primary stabilization is the second step of the SSI React Right program. After assessing the scene and alerting EMS, you need to stabilize any life-threatening problems. This may include providing rescue breathing, administering CPR and first aid, controlling severe bleeding and treating for shock.

First Aid
First Aid is the final step of the SSI React Right program. After the victim(s) have been stabilized, non-life-threatening situations need to be addressed.

The Three R’s:
Recognize, Respond, and Restrict Every emergency situation is unique. We will always refer to “the three R’s” of emergency action to help you identify the type of emergency and the proper actions to take or avoid. To properly take action during an emergency, you must first recognize what kind of situation you are dealing with and what–if any–potential hazards are associated with the situation. Once you recognize the type of emergency you are presented with, you must respond with the appropriate actions to improve and stabilize the situation and victim(s).

Finally, you need to understand the restrictions in order to avoid inappropriate and unnecessary actions that may do further harm to the victim(s) or endanger yourself.
